Research and Scholarship

I value the opportunity to serve as a scholar and contributor of knowledge in the counseling and counselor education professions. I see research as an opportunity to serve and advocate. Through my experience in the counseling and counselor education and supervision professions, I have been involved in numerous research projects and investigations. From these experiences, I have come to value research and scholarship and believe that the profession cannot grow without these things.

Current Research Goals

My research interests are related to the preparedness of counselors working with behavioral addictions (i.e., Gambling Disorder, Internet Gaming Disorder, etc.). Specifically, I am interested in the stigma counselors may experience toward individuals with behavioral addictions when compared to individuals with substance use disorders. My dissertation study focuses on this topic among licensed counselors and licensed chemical dependency counselors, using a quantitative methodology.

Additionally, I am interested in exploring the ways knowledge, attitudes, and leadership in communities may impact the substance use behaviors of individuals within the community through the use of the Community Readiness Model (CRM; Tri-Ethnic Center, 2014). I am currently working to develop a quantitative instrument that is modeled after the existing qualitative CRM. Data found in the pilot study will also be used to develop additional quantitative CRM instruments measuring readiness to change among various community-wide issues (e.g., poverty, racism, suicidal behaviors, etc.).

My final area of focus is the professional identity development of graduate students, specifically regarding research and scholarship. I intend to present information and conduct research on the importance of preparing graduate students to find, read, and conduct research to develop their professional identity at conferences and directly to counseling programs as a form of scholarship and advocacy.
